Explanation
Many farmers believe combining DAP and zinc sulphate saves labour and boosts nutrition. In reality, this combination triggers a well-known chemical antagonism between phosphorus and zinc. DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) is rich in phosphorus. When zinc sulphate is mixed directly with DAP — especially in moist soil or in a tank — the phosphate ions bind with zinc ions to form zinc phosphate, a compound that is largely insoluble and unavailable to plant roots. The result is that much of the zinc you applied never reaches the crop, even though you paid for it. This is one reason why zinc deficiency remains widespread in Indian soils even on farms that "apply zinc" — the zinc is often being locked up rather than absorbed. The correct practice: apply DAP as per your soil test and crop requirement, and apply zinc sulphate separately. For soil application, keep a gap of a few days between the two. For foliar sprays, never tank-mix DAP and zinc together unless a manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility. Using a chelated or scientifically formulated zinc product (which protects the zinc from fixation) further improves uptake.
