The Zinc Cycle in Agriculture

The zinc cycle describes how zinc moves between parent rock, soil, water and plants. Zinc weathers slowly from minerals such as sphalerite (ZnS) at only 20-50 g/ha/year, far below the 100-250 g/ha that crops remove each season. In alkaline Indian soils (pH 7.5-8.5), 80-95% of soil zinc is fixed as insoluble Zn(OH)2 and ZnCO3, leaving only 0.2-2.0 mg/kg plant-available Zn2+.
